Client seeks to obtain title to the house in which she has lived for nearly 30 years through adverse possession. The record owners are client’s deceased grandmother and step-grandfather, who held the property as joint tenants with right of survivorship. Client’s grandmother died in 2002. Her step-grandfather moved out of the house in 1994 and became estranged from the rest of the family; he died intestate in North Carolina in 2007. A number of possible heirs have been identified using step-grandfather’s obituary. A volunteer is needed to help client confirm step-grandfather’s heirs and file a quiet title action against them on the basis of adverse possession.
