Client seeks assistance obtaining title to his home through an adverse possession action. Client rented the property from the record owner until 2004, when the record owner died. Client has remained in the property as the sole occupant, without making any rental payments or having contact with members of the former owner’s family. Client has utility accounts in his own name, including an occupant with ownership interest water account. Since 2004, client has also completed extensive repairs on the property, including partially replacing his roof. VIP has identified a list of heirs that survived the decedent. VIP is assisting this client with completing a tangled title fund application, which will be provided to the volunteer. VIP is also working to identify living heirs of the deceased landlord, as potential defendants to the quiet title action.
