Client seeks representation at a custody hearing on May 2, 2024 at 11am before Judge Elizabeth Jackson regarding her 9-year-old son. Opposing party is the child’s paternal grandmother (PGM). PGM filed for custody in January 2023. Client came to an agreement outside of court with PGM and PGM’s attorney, by which Client was to have sole legal custody and the parties would share physical custody. However, the order entered on the record did not reflect Client’s understanding of the agreement; rather it gave PGM primary physical custody of the child, and Client and PGM shared legal custody. PGM has used to order to undermine Client’s parenting of the child and to exclude her from legal decisions, including pick-up of the child from school and access to his records. At a hearing date in October 2023, the judge maintained the previous order and requested a child advocate, but did not order it. Child recently expressed to Client that he does not want to be with PGM. Client’s goal is to have sole legal custody and primary physical custody of the child. A volunteer is needed to represent Client at the upcoming hearing.
